Mother, son killed in McHenry County crash

A mother and son are dead after a rush-hour crash Friday morning in McHenry Township, police said.

Linda Ghilardi, 46, of McHenry, and her son, Lawrence S. Jett, 22, of McHenry, died from injuries suffered when their SUV collided with a garbage truck about 8 a.m. on South River Road at West Fernview Lane, near Moraine Hills State Park.

Police said Ghilardi was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee headed north on South River Road when it crossed the center line and was hit on the passenger side by the garbage truck, police said.

"It looks like the Jeep lost control, possibly on the ice," said Sgt. Karen Groves of the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

Ghilardi and Jett were taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, where they later were pronounced dead. Both wearing seat belts, sheriff's police said.

The driver of the garbage truck, 39-year-old Kelly Hartman of Crystal Lake, suffered leg pain but was not admitted to the hospital, authorities said.

McHenry Township firefighters and the McHenry County Sheriff's Department responded to the collision. The McHenry County Sheriff's Department Accident Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.

No citations have been issued, and no one has been charged in the crash.
