Trevs shoot down Hawks

Too many mistakes and poor shooting Saturday night cost the Bartlett girls basketball team a chance to surprise highly regarded New Trier.

The Hawks committed 25 turnovers and shot just 29 percent in 56-44 loss in the quarterfinals of the 26th annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown.

"Offensively we were a little out of synch," Hawks coach Denise Sarna said. "(The Trevians) are a little longer than most of the teams we play."

Bartlett (6-5) will play Johnsburg, which fell to St. Charles North 54-51, at 5 p.m. Monday. The Trevians (13-1) advance to face St. Charles North at 8 p.m. Monday in the chamionship semifinals.

The Hawks and the Trevians traded the lead six times in the opening 41/2 minutes, the last coming on a 3-pointer from New Trier's Maggie Lyon as the Trevians took an 11-8 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter. The Hawks never led again.

"There were times we played well," Sarna said. "We had some spurts."

A basket from freshman Ashley Santos with 6:20 remaining in the first half got Bartlett within 3 at 17-14. But New Trier went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-point lead at 23-14 and led 29-18 at halftime. The Hawks were 7 of 29 from the field and turned the ball over 15 times in the first half.

Bartlett cut the deficit to 7 with 3:21 left in the third quarter after a pair of Santos free throws. The Trevians responded with a 17-4 run to take a 50-30 lead with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.

One positive for Bartlett was it outrebounded New Trier 46-38 and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. Nicole Beck led the Hawks with 11 rebounds. But the Hawks were just 16 of 55 from the floor.

"We couldn't get into a rhythm and that's why we didn't shoot very well," Sarna said. "Hopefully that is something that we will gain with experience."

Santos, Kristin Conniff and Samantha Salinas each had 8 points to lead the Hawks. Conniff also had 9 rebounds.

Abbey Schmitt led the Trevians with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Moly Quirke added 13 points.
