Concert series continues at MCC
McHenry County College's popular Second Sunday Concert season continues at 3 p.m., Jan. 11, when folk singers Phil Cooper and Margaret Nelson return for a triple show featuring three musical duos. Other performers include February Sky and Bob and Micky Holdsworth.
The performance will be in the MCC Conference Center at 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. As always, Second Sunday Concerts are free and open to the public, and a reception with light refreshments will follow the performance.
Cooper and Nelson have delighted audiences with their interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk music for more than 25 years. With hundreds of songs in their repertoire, they are able to tailor their performances to specific occasions and audiences. Their approach to folk music is humorous, informative, heartwarming, thought provoking and some of their grim old ballads are hair-raising.
February Sky is a traditional singer and guitarist Phil Cooper with songwriter and singer Susan Urban. Cooper sings and plays his own arrangements of traditional songs and tunes on six-string guitar and citern, and he also interprets a number of carefully chosen songs from the best of modern folk song writers.
Susan Urban is a writer of story songs and humorous slice-of-life songs. She accompanies her singing on guitar, six string banjo, mountain dulcimer and hand percussion instruments.
Bob and Micky Holdsworth are performing songwriters who get their inspiration from the hard-won triumphs and all too easy slip-ups of our everyday lives. But the songs aren't really autobiographical; taking a cue from master storytellers, they don't let truth get in the way of a good story. The duo may pull some old favorites from their collection, including jazz/pop masters Cab Calloway and Hoagy Carmichael, as well as acoustic classics by Roger McGuinn, Jerry Garcia and Richard Thompson.
Music lovers should also mark their calendars for Feb. 18, when jazz artists Maureen Christine and Michael Bazan take the stage.
