Bloomingdale house uninhabitable after fire

The Bloomingdale Fire Department is investigating the cause of an early Monday morning fire that left a house uninhabitable on the 100 block of Raven Lane.

Firefighters arrived around 6 a.m. and discovered flames shooting from the roof of the two-story home. The family had already evacuated the home and no one was injured, officials said.

Two cars also were destroyed, reports said.

Subzero temperatures posed challenges to rescue workers, who dealt with two frozen hydrants and took shelter in a warming bus while rotating shifts to fight the flames. Officials said Bloomingdale's public works department helped prevent injuries by salting the roadways leading to the house and clearing icy debris from the driveways so firefighters wouldn't slip.

Fire departments from Addison, Carol Stream, Itasca, Roselle and Schaumburg assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
