Patient Glenbard W. outlast Naperville N.

Glenbard West girls basketball coach Mike Hofland preaches patience on offense.

With the size the Hilltoppers have, it's hard to blame him.

Glenbard West used its superior size of 6-foot-1 Cayla Herbst, 6-foot Abigail Hastings and 5-11 Kathryn Lux to its advantage in Friday's 65-51 win over host Naperville North at the Naperville North/Benet Holiday Tournament.

Naperville North's tallest starter stands just 5-9. The disparity was glaring, as Glenbard West's three posts combined for 40 points and 17 rebounds.

"We have to learn to be patient," Hofland said. "We're going to get good shots whenever we want. We have to get the ball inside."

Patience was at a premium in a frenetic first quarter. Naperville North (2-9), which came in winners of two of its last four games, pressured Glenbard West into 7 turnovers in the first quarter. Emily Carpenter's runner gave the Huskies a 15-13 lead after a quarter.

"The first quarter is the way we've been playing our last couple games," said Huskies coach Jacquie Discipio. "That's the tempo and the movement we've become used to seeing."

Herbst, who had 12 points, put back one of her 9 rebounds for a score to start the second quarter and Cassie Goggin scored to give Glenbard West the lead for good at 19-17.

Up 30-22 at the half, the Hilltoppers put the game away for good in the third. Lux scored 7 of her game-high 16 points in the quarter, working well with her fellow posts in angling in short shots near the basket.

"We knew we had a size advantage," Lux said. "Instead of settling for outside shots we were patient around the outside and looked to get the ball inside. Us post players, we pretty much feed off of each other."

Hastings added 12 points and Abbey White 10 for the Hilltoppers (10-4), winners of seven of their last eight games.

"We missed a lot of layups tonight," Hofland said. "We knew once we settled down, we'd be all right."

Colleen Warren scored 18 points, Kaelyn Witkowski 14 and Haley Krentz 10 for Naperville North.

"In our 3-2 zone, we were focusing in on identifying their bigger players and keeping them out of the paint," Discipio said. "At times we did that. But then at times they had our way with us. We've taken two steps forward the last week. Tonight we kind of took a step back."
