Fremd tops Barrington in OT

Fremd had to work a little extra Friday night to finally get in the win column.

The Vikings (1-7, 1-2) would prevail 57-50 in overtime in the Mid-Suburban West boys basketball game at Barrington (1-9, 0-3).

"We just didn't make plays, and had too many turnovers" said Broncos coach Marty Dello, "When we took the timeout (with four minutes left) in the third quarter, we wanted to stop being conservative, and all of a sudden the lead evaporated. It's a game of runs."

The Broncos found themselves in foul trouble early, putting the Vikings in the double-bonus throughout the first half. Even though the free shots were there, the Vikings were never able to put the game away, only going 7-of-14 from the line.

The Vikings would obtain their lead making the halftime score 24-20. Daniel Bruno (20 points on 10-of-13 from the line) led the way with 10 points in the first half.

In the second half, the Broncos changed to a man-to-man defense to put a halt on Bruno's scoring. This boosted the Broncos' momentum, giving them a 16-1 run to take their first lead of the game.

Scoring droughts and turnovers put the game at a 39-39 standstill for three minutes of the fourth quarter.

With 1:15 left in the game Bruno was sent to the line and sank 2 free throws. Broncos' forward Mack Darrow would then come back on the next possession and scored an uncontested layup to tie the game at 41-41 and force overtime.

Senior guard Alex Weis led the Vikings to victory scoring 8 of his 10 points in overtime. He tallied 1 of his 6 steals in extended play to cement their victory.

"We were fired up tonight and wanted to make this one count," said Weis, "One of my jobs is to help the team on defense.

"I don't score too much, but I try to beat people to their spot and find the ball on D.'"

The game stayed close for the most part in overtime as well, but the Broncos had senior forward Bryant Sullivan and guard Sam Handler foul out, to put the Vikings at the line, sealing their victory.

"I told the kids that I was very proud of them. We kept our composure after we lost the lead," said Fremd coach Bob Widlowski. "We've been playing well, we just need to be more consistent for 32 minutes."
