Briefs: Last day for donation
Today is the last day to drop off a new, unwrapped toy at South Elgin Fire Station 1, 150 W. State St., and Station 2, 2055 McDonald Road. The South Elgin Fire Protection District has teamed up with the Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots program to help make sure needy children in the area receive a new toy this holiday season. In addition to serving as a toy drop-off location, the fire district is again serving as a drop-off site for state Rep. Randy Ramey's annual coat drive. New and gently-used coats for all ages will be collected at both fire stations.
Huntley library open house
The Huntley Area Public Library is hosting its annual holiday open house. The event includes music, children's crafts and possible visit from Santa. Everyone who attends receives a free book. Cross country by candlelight
Discover the beauty of cross-country skiing on trails lit only by candlelight from 5 to 9 tonight and Saturday at The Hollows-Grove No. 2, 3804 Route 14 in Cary. Bone up on cooking skills
The Dundee Township Public Library will present "Your Cooking Arsenal" with Chef Michael Niksic at 2 p.m. Saturday at the West Dundee Public Safety Center II, 100 Carrington Ave., at the intersection of Route 72 and Sleepy Hollow Road. Niksic will demonstrate a variety of cookware and offer tips on what to look for when buying kitchen utensils, pots and pans. He also will describe which cookware is hazardous to your health as well as share basic kitchen skills such as knife sharpening, correct use of cutting boards, kitchen maintenance and safety, top cleaning tips and organizing skills. And if you're looking for a holiday gift for the chef in your family, Niksic will provide tips on what not to get, where to get what you want and why.
