Holidays by candlelight

Celebrate the holiday season and learn about local history at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve's "Durant House Museum: Candlelight Open House" program. Costumed docents will welcome guests to the candle-lit prairie homestead, adorned with authentic period decor from the 1840s. Warm your hands by a roaring fire and see an old-fashioned Christmas tree. The event also features live music, dramatic performances, hot cider and baked treats.

2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, Dean Street, west of Randall Road, Kane County Forest Preserve District, St. Charles. Admission is free. Donations are welcome. Visit ppfv.org. (630) 377-6424.

Sharing stories

Hear everything from true tales to folk tales relating to Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa as local and national storytellers perform in the "Holiday Storytelling Festival."

Buy some treats for your bearded dragon

The Lake County Reptile Show features snakes, bearded dragons, geckos and other reptiles for viewing and for purchase. Visitors can also buy food and other supplies to care for their critters.

Celebrating the culture of India

The Desi Dance Club presents "Show Me Your Jalwa," a dance and fashion show celebrating the culture of India. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Apna Ghar, a domestic violence shelter that serves Asian women and children.

A voice is a terrible thing to waste
