Thanks for the memories, Bob
The tribute to Bob Frisk Saturday night at the old Arlington High School was touching and very nostalgic. As I made my way up the stairs of Grace Gym, I was greeted by an Arlington Alum (Class of 77) wearing his letterman's jacket as a doorman.
Upon entry, there was a display of old Arlington pennants and other memorabilia. The Arlington alumni section was soon filled with former students from the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s, many in their old jerseys, "A Club" varsity sweaters, coats, hats etc.
The fans included former coach and Athletic Director Russ Attis, and former Dean of Students Guy Vena (still looking to hand out detentions to former students). It was truly a homecoming of sorts. I would estimate that the "Arlington" section outnumbered the fans from either of the schools playing the game.
At halftime, tributes for Bob came from family and friends. Bob's remarks included a passionate quote that "they took away our school, but they didn't take away our spirit."
How right he was. When the Buffalo Grove band played our old school song "Hail to Ole Arlington," the scene was electrifying. Imagine an estimated 300 alumni spanning 4 decades on their feet cheering and clapping unashamedly 25 years after our school closed!
After the game, there was a reception in the cafeteria where Bob was warmly greeted by several former Arlington athletes, current and former coaches from the Mid Suburban League and other well wishers. I am sure it was a night that Bob Frisk will never forget, and it was well deserved.
A special thanks to all the people that made this event possible, especially The Christian Liberty Academy for again graciously opening their doors to the community.
