Briefs: Funeral for teen hit-run victim
The funeral for Monika Skrzypkowski, the Arlington Heights 15-year-old and Hersey High School sophomore who was struck and killed by a car last Saturday night, has been set. The funeral will take place at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Lauterberg & Oehler Fneral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Hwy., Arlington Heights. Fellow Hersey student Kevin Schuh, 17, has been charged with aggravated drunken driving, reckless homicide and hit-and-run in Skrzypkowski's death. Police said he struck the girl with his car while she was crossing Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights and then fled. His bond was set at $500,000.
Injured trying to stop theft
A resident on the 200 block of North Owen Street in Mount Prospect was punched in the face when he tried to stop two men from stealing his wallet out of his 1999 Ford Explorer around 4:55 a.m. Dec. 5. Police said the man saw his motion sensor light go on outside his home, and saw the men in and around his SUV. He chased them down Owen Street nearly to Central Road, where he grabbed one burglar's coat. The burglar swung around and punched the man on the face, knocking off his glasses and causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. The offender dropped the wallet, but cash and 15 credit cards were missing, along with a cell phone. Paramedics treated the resident at the scene; his total estaimted loss was $1,900.
Theft nets big haul
Burglars stole more than $100,000 in jewelry Friday evening from a residence in the 1400 block of Phoenix Drive in Des Plaines, police said. Missing items included 10 diamond rings and 25 gold necklaces. Comdr. Dan Niemann said there was no evidence the house was targetted; it appears to have been a random crime. He reminded people that its best to keep valuables in a bank safety deposit box or a safe, especially if they're not in regular use.
Fire damages home
A chimney fire Sunday afternoon ignited the roof on a home in the 700 block of Silver Rock Lane in Buffalo Grove. The homeowners, Alvin Schwab and his wife, started a fire in the fireplace; a short time later the smoke alarm sounded, police said. He went outside and saw smoke and flames coming from the roof of the house. A damage estimate was not available.
