Teen charged in hit-and-run that killed Arlington Heights girl

A Mount Prospect teen was charged late Sunday night with reckless homicide and aggravated drunken driving in the death of a 15-year-old Arlington Heights girl late Saturday in Prospect Heights, police officials said.

Prospect Heights Police Chief Bruce Morris said Kevin Schuh, 17, struck Monika Skrzypkowski, 15, with his car as she crossed Elmhurst Road about 11 p.m., minutes after she called her mother for a ride home from a family birthday party at her boyfriend's house.

About an hour after the accident, Morris said Schuh contacted police claiming someone had damaged his car and that he wanted a police report taken.

Officers went to Schuh's home, saw the damage on the car and matched it to the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.

"He was taken to the police station and questioned about the accident," Morris said. "We are still investigating other issues with the incident, but that should be wrapped up shortly."

He said the Cook County Major Crime Assistance Team assisted in the investigation.

He would not say whether Schuh confessed to the hit-and-run, but said there was enough evidence to prove the car and Schuh were involved in the accident.

Schuh was administered a breath-alcohol test at the police station and registered a .06 BAC, police said. Because the teen was driving impaired when hitting and killing Skrzypkowski, Morris said, he was charged with aggravated DUI causing bodily harm or death -- a Class 2 felony.

Schuh is currently in custody and is expected to appear in a Rolling Meadows bond court at 1 p.m., Morris said.

Skrzypkowski was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights Saturday night where she was pronounced dead 40 minutes after the accident.
