Briefs: Batavia OKs tax levy
Batavia is asking for 7.1 percent more in property taxes in 2009, in a levy request approved this week by the city council. It is asking for $6.19 million. The request now goes to the county clerk, who will determine, once the value of land in the city has been determined by the county supervisor of assessments, how much of the request the city will get. Because property values are expected to go up and new construction will be added to the tax rolls, officials expect the rate to be almost 2 cents lower. A $300,000 house would be billed $506, or $17 less, than a $300,000 house was billed in 2008.

A part of the proceeds will be donated to Lazarus House shelter in St. Charles. Winter jackets are also being collected for charity. A $5 discount will be given with a donation.
Football program aid:
The Home Depot Foundation has awarded a community grant in the amount of $1700 to the Batavia Parks Foundation to help support the Batavia Youth Football program. Due to construction at Batavia High School, BYF had to relocate to Rotolo Middle School this season. As a result it did not have a place to store field equipment. With the grant, and help from store employees, it was able to build a shed at Prairie Path Park near the school.
