Gross quits as Hinsdale Central coach

Steve Gross, who coached Hinsdale Central's girls basketball team to the 2002 Class AA championship, resigned on Wednesday two weeks into his 15th season.

Hinsdale Central athletic director Paul Moretta confirmed Gross' resignation on Thursday morning. Moretta would not elaborate on the reason Gross gave for his decision, but it was reportedly following a dispute with an administrator. Moretta emphasized that Gross was not fired or asked to resign.

Assistant coach Morgan Kasperek, the Hinsdale Central career scoring leader and member of the 2002 title team who later played at the University of Iowa, has assumed the coaching duties on an interim basis. The Red Devils beat Benet 43-25 on Thursday night in Kasperek's first game as head coach.

Moretta said the decision on who will coach the team on a permanent basis is still being evaulated.

"It's a fluid situation," Moretta said.

In his tenure at Hinsdale Central, Gross compiled a 343-85 record with four sectional championships, 11 regional titles and nine West Suburban Silver titles. His 2002 team led by Kasperek and Maggie Acuna went 34-1, advanced to the state tournament for the only time in school history and defeated Marian Catholic to win the Class AA title.

Calls to Gross were not returned.
