Briefs: Watch for whooping cough

Hawthorn District 73 is cautioning parents to be vigilant in light of cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Cases have been diagnosed in the area, including Townline Elementary School, according to the district. Even if a child has been vaccinated, protection begins to wear off before the next "booster" and cases can occur in fully vaccinated children. In those cases, symptoms may be milder and similar to other respiratory illnesses. If anyone in a family (child or adult) develops a cough or cold-like symptoms, please consult your doctor and remind them of the concern regarding pertussis. The district says it is important to avoid contact with infants under the age of 6 months and women in their third trimester of pregnancy until an assessment by a physician.
