Truck driver ticketed after semi hits bridge on I-94

An Indiana truck driver was cited Thursday after his semitrailer truck hit a bridge support in the southbound lanes of I-94 at Willow Road near Northfield.

State Police Master Sgt. S. Nowak said the driver of the truck, which was hauling scrap cars, hit a bridge support at the underpass, then left the scene. The crash dislodged a scrap car bumper that fell onto the hood and windshield of a 2007 Cadillac behind it, injuring a female driver who was taken to Rush North Shore Medical Center for minor injuries.

Nowak said the truck driver was pulled over a couple of miles south of the accident. He added it is unclear if the driver knew he hit the bridge. Structural engineers with the Illinois Department of Transportation remained on the scene to determine the structural integrity of the bridge, Nowak said.

One lane was blocked when the accident happened about 7:45 a.m., and was later reopened, Nowak said. The truck driver, David Sawvel, 49, of St. Joseph, Ind., received two citations for the truck being over the height limit and for leaving the scene of the accident, police said.
