Houses, judges sought for holiday decoration contest
That chill in the air is a sign that the holidays will soon be upon us again. Time to think about how you'll create your own memories of 2008.
One popular tradition is that of house decorating. This year the Schaumburg Park District is offering you the chance to be a contestant, serve as a judge, or simply soak in the lights and sights while helping select the best decorated houses in the area.
To enter the Holiday House Decorating Contest, decorate your home before Dec. 8 and submit the entry form by 5 p.m. Nov. 28.
Entry forms are on page 64 of the winter brochure available at all Schaumburg Park District facilities. The first 15 houses entered will be judged. No entry fee is required but houses must be within park district boundaries.
The Holiday House Decorating Tour will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 8. The bus leaves promptly at 6 p.m. from the north entrance of the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road.
Contestants may not serve as judges but are still welcome on the tour. Preregistration costs $4 for residents and $5 for nonresidents.

Christkindlesmarkt to return: The village of Schaumburg will celebrate the holiday season with Christkindlesmarkt - its annual, European-influenced open-air holiday market Nov. 29 and 30 at Town Square at the southwest corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads.
Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. Admission and parking are both free.
Based on the holiday festival of the same name in Nuremberg, Germany, Christkindlesmarkt features ethnic and domestic crafts, holiday gift items, food, live entertainment, children's activities, and visits from Santa and St. Nicholas.
Children wishing to participate in the Festival of Lights on Saturday, Nov. 29, should meet at the information booth at Christkindlesmarkt at 5:15 p.m. Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be offered for a small fee both days.
Christkindlesmarkt is sponsored by the village in cooperation with the Schaumburg Township District Library. In addition, the Schaumburg Jaycees will be present again this year with their Wish Tree.
