Briefs: 'The Boys' at Batavia

The dramatic comedy, "The Boys Next Door," will be performed at 7:30 tonight in the Batavia High School cafeteria. The second performance will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. It's the story of four mentally challenged men who live together in a group home, and the social worker who works with them. "It's a home run of a play," director Joshua Casburn said. In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the Kane County Bar Association has scheduled monthly Ask a Lawyer Days throughout 2008. Under the program, free legal advice is available to the public by calling (630) 762-1900 from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month. The next session is Saturday. Cancer center vote delayed

The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board postponed a vote on a proposed traditional cancer treatment center to be built adjacent to Central DuPage Hospital's proton therapy cancer treatment center in Warrenville. A group of doctors opposing the project submitted a list of questions about the project to the board ahead of the meeting Wednesday in Chicago. The state regulatory board said the questions needed to be answered before deliberations could begin. The issue could come up at the board's December meeting, officials said.

Torres to hold open sessions

New U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres will hold daytime and evening open sessions to meet with U-46 community members. Every other month, Torres will hold a noontime "brown bag lunch" for community members from noon to 1 p.m. at district headquarters, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The evening sessions, also every other month, will take place at 6 p.m. at the Elgin High School library, preceding the monthly Citizens' Advisory Council meeting. Dates for brown bag lunch sessions are be Dec. 11, Feb. 12 and April 16. Evening sessions will be Thursday, Jan. 15, March 12 and May 7.

City offers free light bulbs

Aurora residents can receive free, compact, fluorescent light bulbs while supplies last by stopping by city hall, 44 E. Downer Place, or the Customer Service Center/Fire Station 8, 3770 McCoy Drive. Senior citizens 65 and older may pick up five bulbs. Other residents will receive one bulb. Recipients should bring proof of residency. The bulbs were made available through a grant from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. Call (630) 264-4636.
