Briefs: Palatine band on WGN radio
Tune in at 8:10 a.m. Saturday to WGN 720-AM to hear the Palatine High School marching band perform "Louie, Louie" on "Mr. Fix-It with Lou Manfredini." The band recorded the song on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The bit will also be on the Web at wgnradio.com.
Liver transplant fundraiser
A bowling fundraiser will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, in Des Plaines to benefit Shelby Karafa Donnelly of Rosemont, who was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease in 2006 and needs a liver transplant to survive. The average liver transplant costs approximately $500,000 and daily anti-rejection medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 each month. Her current medical bills are approximately $1,000 a month, and she takes 35 pills a day. The fundraiser, which will include a silent auction, is from 1 to 7 p.m. at River Rand Bowl, 191 S. River Road. Admission is $30 for adults, $15 for children ages 11-17 and $10 for children 10 and younger. The National Foundation for Transplants will use proceeds to assist Karafa Donnelly. Donations also can be sent to the NFT Illinois Liver Fund, P.O. Box 5493, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, or made at transplants.org.
Craft sale at high school
More than 150 crafters will be selling items at the annual Holiday Craft Boutique Saturday at Rolling Meadows High School, 2901 Central Road in Rolling Meadows. Everything will be handmade, and handcrafted gifts will be raffled all day. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; admission is $2. Proceeds will benefit the school's athletic boosters.
Computers recycled
Des Plaines and the Des Plaines Public Library will accept computers, monitors, keyboards, mice and printers for recycling from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Ellinwood Street parking lot near the library, which is at 1501 Ellinwood St. The equipment will be refurbished for schools and other not-for-profit organizations. Playgrounds built Saturday
Children's Home and Aid will host a volunteer playground build at 10:15 a.m. Saturday to construct two playgrounds at its new Schaumburg Child and Family Center to open in early 2009 at 725 E. Schaumburg Road. The playgrounds are being made possible with the assistance of the village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Park District. They are part of Children's Home and Aid's $4.5 million capital campaign to double capacity for early childhood care and education services at its Schaumburg facility. The site is just west of the intersection of Schaumburg and Plum Grove roads.
