Kelsey Augustine GenevaLast year, Geneva coach KC Johnsen listed this junior middle hitter as a player to watch out for, and he was right. The Vikings' block leader landed a spot on the first team in the WSC and should be as effective for the team next year. She finished with 278 kills and 73 aces. "I'm just terribly impressed with her," Johnsen said. "She plays so hard and so smart at the same time. She'll hit what's there. She hits a heavy ball."
Laura Doolin BataviaThis versatile Bradley-bound setter/hitter (13th D-I player in school volleyball history) led the team with 274 kills, 48 aces, 225 digs and a 91 percent serve-receive. Career stats include 561 digs, 597 assists, 598 kills, 117 aces and has the most wins in her 4-year varsity career. "Laura has a great work ethic and she is a very talented athlete," coach Lori Trippi-Payne said.
Karlie Giesler St. Charles NorthThis junior finished with 113 kills, 248 assists, 106 digs, 52 aces and was chosen unanimously in the Upstate Eight's all-conference team. She also made the all-tourney teams in the Wheaton Classic and at Minooka. "Karlie never came off the court," St. Charles North coach Lindsay Trudell said of Giesler, whose older sister Gretchen made all-area last year as well. "She was an asset to us in all facets of the game, Plus, as a first year setter, she really stepped into her new role very smoothly."
Kelly Hogan RosaryThis do-it-all outside hitter will be terribly missed by coach Lisa Kasper after being on varsity for four years. Hogan finished her final year on the Suburban Catholic Conference first team while breaking the school record in aces, thanks to her skilled jump-serve. She also led the team in digs and posted almost 300 kills this season.
Laura Homann St. Charles EastThis two-time all-area captain made players around her teammates better with her accurate sets. The senior, who will play at Syracuse next year, is the sixth Saint to receive captain honors. She has posted over 2,000 assists, and coach Jennie Kull called her one of the best setters in the history of the program.
Taylor Koncelik BataviaKoncelik, a two-time all-area choice, led her team with a 97.7 percent serve percentage and 206 points. She was second on the team with 172 kills, 46 aces, 184 digs and a 90 percent serve receive. "Taylor has a great work ethic and is a very talented athlete," coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. "She also is a great all-around player."
Megan Odenthal GenevaThere's more to come from this junior setter, but this year, she worked with Kelsey Augustine and Lauren Wicinski and performed well as she racked up 873 assists. Expect more of the same next year. "I'm really happy how Megan has stepped in," Geneva coach KC Johnsen said. "I think she is going to be an awfully good setter. I think she is awfully good right now."
Caroline Niski St. Charles EastSweet demeanor, mean kills. This junior was up-and-coming last year, but has done a great job this year with the Saints after posting over 250 kills, over 240 digs and over 30 aces. "She's got the hammer," SCE coach Jennie Kull said. "She's as kind as can be, but she is a terminator. She gets it done. She's a perfectionist. She likes to do things the best she can. It's a great gift."
Jackie Ream KanelandReam, the team's MVP and only Kaneland player to make all-conference, led the team in blocks (44) and kills (135). She also had 32 aces, 97 digs and a 1.88 serve-receive, something most middle hitters normally don't do. "She was a great leader," Kaneland coach Todd Weimer said of this three-year varsity member. "She did a lot for us. She performed well. Those are some big shoes to fill."
Jacqui Seidel St. Charles EastThis junior was a hitter this year, but may see time as a setter next year. Still, she tallied over 240 kills, over 80 blocks and over 30 aces. "Jacqui is dynamic," coach Jennie Kull said. "Everything she does is 100 percent. She's a competitor. She is the one who gets it done. She loves to win. She loves to fight to win. I love that. Whether it's defense, setting, hitting, serving, blocking ... everything she does is competitive."
Lindsey Weber RosaryFor four years, this senior hitter has done some great things for the Royals. For three of those years, she was on the all-area team. This year, she is approaching the 300-kill mark and almost has 1,000 total. "Lindsey has done a great job all season long, despite playing with tendinitis in both knees," Rosary coach Lisa Kasper said of this all-Suburban Catholic Conference first teamer.
Lauren Wicinski GenevaHer kills (380), her serving, her digs and her all-around play. These things helped Wicinski earn the Western Sun Conference's MVP award. "Lauren is one of the top all-around players all year," coach KC Johnsen said of this Division-I prospect. "She's really stepped up in being a great leader. You can go to her. She's a great blocker and great digger. She wants the ball."
