• Soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as many parts of the United States, are exposed to winds and bitter cold during the winter months. Riding in open trucks and Humvees, they often encounter subzero wind chills. The military head gear issued to the soldiers today is made of synthetic material that is not as warm as wool. Volunteer knitters are needed to make wool caps for our soldiers. If you don't know how to knit, consider providing wool yarn to someone who can. The wool knitted head covering, which can be worn under the Kevlar helmet, provides warmth to the head and neck but does not restrict vision. The pattern is available at www.geocities.com/helmetliner. For details, e-mail helmetliner@hotmail.com. Completed liners can be dropped off in Batavia at Ace Hardware, in Aurora at Marmion Academy on Butterfield Road or mailed to Marmion Academy, 1000 Butterfield Road, Aurora, IL 60502; Attn. ROTC Department. Liners will be sent to C Troop, 106 Cavalry of the Illinois National Guard now deployed in Afghanistan.
