Makeup days for strike unfair

The students in Huntley Unit District 158 will not have Wednesday, Nov. 5, off due to it's a makeup day for the teachers going on strike. Same for Feb. 13 and June 3.

I think all of the parents who have a student there should keep their kids home that day.

I don't think the students should make up days because teachers want more money. If the teachers could make more in a different school district, let them go there.

The students were not thought of nor the parents who had to make other plans for their kids. If we want more money and get turned down, the rest of us would have to find another place of employment.

As far as I know, any person who is being paid by tax dollars like police, fire and librarians cannot strike, according to Illinois law. But the teachers who get paid by tax dollars can. Over 54 percent of my tax bill goes to teachers. That's more than any other public servant gets. Yet I keep hearing how the schools are so underfunded, teachers over worked and underpaid.

Illinois is the 7th highest state to publicly fund their schools, yet we rank at the bottom of list for children's educations.

It used to be that a teacher was dedicated to the students - not to their checkbooks. With over 740,000 people laid off this year in nine months, maybe it's time to hold the teachers and the district responsible to the people who pay their salaries.

Let the teachers strike when it doesn't affect the students or the parents. After all, it's the teachers who want the money - not the students.
