Cast a vote, get a flu shot

During this year's national presidential election, more than 125 million Americans are expected to pass through polling places. To take advantage of this unique opportunity, the McHenry County Department of Health will host "Vote & Vax" flu shot clinics, for those 9 years of age and older, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 at five polling sites in McHenry County. Locations include; Whispering Hills Community Center, 4708 Jeffrey St., Johnsburg; The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry; St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, 8901 Cary-Algonquin Road, Cary; Marengo Rescue Office, 110 Telegraph St., Marengo; and Huntley Park District, 12015 Mill St., Huntley.

The "Vote & Vax" project is a national partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration.

Flu season can begin as early as October and last until the spring, however, winter is usually the prime time for influenza. Influenza is a contagious, upper respiratory illness which spreads easily through coughing or sneezing. Protect yourself and your family by getting your flu shot on Election Day.

Anyone can get the flu but adults 50 years of age and older and those with chronic medical conditions are at greater risk for serious complications. Influenza is responsible for approximately 36,000 deaths annually in the U.S., with 200,000 being hospitalized from flu complications. Medicare Part B covers the shot in full. The cost is $35.
