Algonquin crash victim ID'd
Algonquin police on Sunday released the names of the three women hospitalized Saturday after a two-vehicle collision at Randall Road and Harnish Drive.
Tiffany Avelar, 30, of Pingree Grove, was behind the wheel of the Kia Sephia that crashed into a Pontiac G6 at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.
She was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where her condition was not immediately known.
Avelar's mother, Renee Westergaard, 54, of Lake in the Hills, was in the passenger seat next to her daughter.
She was flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and remained in critical condition Sunday, a nursing supervisor said.
Nineteen-year-old Kathryn Kostopoulos of Pingree Grove was driving the Pontiac. She is listed in fair condition at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, a nursing supervisor said.
Police say the Kia was traveling south on Randall Road at 11:39 a.m. when it turned left into the path of a Pontiac headed north on Randall Road.
All three women were extricated from the cars.
Northbound Randall Road near the accident was closed for about an hour. One lane remained closed until all traffic was allowed at 2:45 p.m.
Westbound Harnish was also closed until 2:45 p.m., police said.
Police say they have no reason to believe drugs or alcohol were involved in Saturday's crash, which is still under investigation. No tickets have been issued, said Sgt. Jeff Sutrick.
