Girls volleyball regional results

Warren regional: Mid-Suburban co-champion and No. 3 seed Conant stopped No. 14 Schaumburg 25-19, 21-25, 25-18 and will meet No. 6 Warren for the title Saturday at 1 p.m.

"Things were going well but we kind of went into a stall in the second game," said Conant Hall of Fame coach Peggy Scholten, whose club improved to 28-7. "But Schaumburg was playing at a high level. They switched their offense from a 6-2 to a 5-1.

"You can never look past Schaumburg (13-23). Jeanette (Pancratz) always has them ready to play. It was a great match."

Scholten said senior Julie Hartsfeld did a great job serving off the bench for the Cougars. She was 7-of-9 with 3 aces.

"She had some very crucial serves for us," Scholten said.

Senior Mandy Larsen led the Cougars with 10 kills while senior Katherine Hozian added 9. Senior Kelsey Paulson, senior Georgie Kutrumanes and junior Kristin Perschon each added 4.

As usual, senior Tricia Kutrumanes set the offense collecting 27 assists.

Senior Lynette Mueller collected 11 digs.

"And Georgie Krutumanes (3 blocks) was great," Scholten said. "She was solid all the way around."

Evanston regional: No. 8 Maine West (24-12) advanced to the regional championship with a 25-19, 26-24 triumph over No. 9 Resurrection coming back from a 24-19 deficit in Game 2. The Warriors faced top-seeded Evanston at 7 p.m. Saturday for the title.

Liz Freeman stepped to the line at 24-20 and served out the match. The senior setter started with an ace and got 3 kills from Bradley-bound Alise Tupuritis (15 kills, 2 blocks) and a block from Emily Ott (2 kills) during the match-winning rally.

"Martha Gajewski (1 ace) broke open the first game with five great serves," said West coach Randy Tiller. "It was close before she started (10-10), and even after she finished (25-19). Her serving, along with 7 kills by Tupuritis spelled the difference."

Tiller said the "character of the team" came through in Game 2.

"During Lix Freeman's big serving run, Resurrection relentlessly returned the ball to Freeman, taking us out of our offense, but Ott rose to the occasion, became the setter, and set three beautiful balls to Tupuritis, who put them on the floor.

"Our girls knew they had to win the mental game and they did. They were focused and determined to play at their collective best. Those final 7 points showed this team is never out of a match."

Libertyville regional: No. 16 Mundelein posted a 25-12, 25-10 triumph over No. 18 Wheeling (8-28) in the play-in match. The Wildcats were led by Kelsie Jurik (4 kills, 4 assists), Bianca Szafarowicz (3 kills) and Diana Stankowicz (3 kills, 5 assists).
