Alas, the daily read a long way away

Alack and alas. Woe is me! Along with failing economy, dwindling bank account, acrimonious presidential debates, global warming to mention a few downers, comes another blow. My morning newspaper at the end of a long driveway!

The Daily Herald on my front stoop has been the highlight of my day. Open the door, snag the paper with my grasper and sit down with newspaper, hot coffee and raisin toast. Sigh. Read the front page, meander through to the editorial page, sometimes to agree, sometimes to argue a point or two. End up with "Pickles" on the comic page and my real wake up call: solve the daily crossword puzzle. For an 88-year-old, it beats running around the block.

But now comes the sad news. With winter coming and snow and ice in the offing, how will I retrieve my paper? Sigh.
