Why people become cynics about politics

Our government executive and legislative departments have forgotten their primary responsibilities are to take care of their respective areas and the citizens.

They seem to feel their first responsibilities are to guarantee their economic welfare, present and future, and the economic success of their contributors.

After that, they will consider the needs of the nation, state, county or municipality they represent - e.g., the Illinois legislature and Chicago aldermen, due to the poor state of their budgets, have cut services and fired many employees, but they made sure they received wage increases.

The beginning of each year, Social Security recipients receive a cost-of-living increase which is usually offset by increases in Medicare premiums.

However, Congress' cost-of-living increase is always higher than Social Security's increase.

How can the cost of living be higher in the hallowed walls of Congress than the rest of the nation?

Every year the cost of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid programs increase while the benefits are decreased. Do we know if Congress and other government departments have similar decreases?

During this presidential campaign, we have been asked to tighten our belts and plan on retiring at a later date, if at all.

Most of us are willing, if able, to do so, but we would like to be sure our elected officials are tightening their belts also.

Is there any question about why most people, especially the young, are very cynical about our governments?
