Briefs: Local election packets

Attention may be riveted on the Nov. 4 general election but local entities, such as school districts and municipalities, are reminding interested residents that nominating forms for the April 7, 2009, consolidated election are available. Petitions can't be circulated until Tuesday, Oct. 28, and are due back to the appropriate entity between Jan. 20 and 26. Anyone interested in running for local office should contact the appropriate jurisdiction for details, such as how many seats are up for election and what the terms are. The number of signatures required on nominating petitions must be between 5 percent and 8 percent of the number of voters in the 2007 consolidated election.

Dist. 73 town hall meeting

Residents of Hawthorn District 73 are invited to a second town hall presentation at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3 at Townline Elementary School, 810 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. The presenter is Douglas Reeves, a noted educator and speaker who will offer insights on school quality, student achievement, accountability and assessment beyond test scores. Free child care will be provided; those planning to use the service are asked to call (847) 990-4200.

'Stand down' for veterans

The Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County and the North Chicago Veterans Administration Medical Center are sponsoring a "stand down" for veterans from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. Stand down refers to a military term of refitting troops and preparing for the next mission. The event will feature exams by a nurse practitioner, eye exams and employment and educational counseling. Haircuts and boxed lunches will be available, and winter coats will be distributed to veterans on food stamps. The event is at VAC offices, 20 S. Martin Luther King Jr., Ave., Waukegan. Harris Road to close

Harris Road in Libertyville will be closed to through traffic from Peterson Road to Route 137 for three days beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. The road is being closed to allow the Canadian National Railroad to repair the concrete crossing sections and resurface Harris Road as it leads to the crossing as well as between the two crossings. The detour route is Peterson Road to Route 45 to Route 137.

Get a jump on Halloween

The Mundelein Park District is offering a jump on a kid's favorite with its traditional "Night Before Halloween" event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. The annual free event is for children 3 to 11 and is filled with treats, goodies and fun. Adult supervision is required. Treats and giveaways are provided by more than 25 area businesses.
