Dineen is back in basketball with lessons at new facility

Was there ever any doubt?

Did you honestly expect Tom Dineen to stay away from basketball?

Dineen, the legendary Hall of Fame coach who retired after 29 successful years guiding the Buffalo Grove girls basketball program, will be back on the sidelines in November and December in a different role.

He will be teaching basketball, as always, but there will be no pressure-packed games or state rankings or dramatic battles to reach the Illinois high school tournament.

Dineen, who finished with 676 varsity wins at Buffalo Grove and nine trips to the state finals with one Class AA title, will be working at Lake Barrington Field House, a new athletic facility at Northwest Highway (Route 14) and Pepper Road in Barrington.

"Fast Break Girls Basketball by Tom Dineen" is the name of the program for grades 6 through 12 on Wednesdays beginning Nov. 12 (4-10 p.m.) or Sundays beginning Nov. 16 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.).

Lessons will be six weeks for one hour a week and will conclude Dec. 17 or 21.

Dineen will give individual lessons and small-group instruction with the opportunity to come in for shoot-arounds and for informal pickup games and also team instruction and practices.

Open gym times are 6-8 p.m. Sundays for junior high and 8-10 p.m. Sundays for high school.

Dineen also will hold a girls basketball coaches clinic at the Lake Barrington Field House on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 8-9:30 p. m. for any travel team, park district or junior high coaches. There will be discussion and on-court demonstrations with question-and-answer sessions on conducting a practice, skills and drills.

• The Prospect High School Girls Feeder Basketball program has set its tryout dates for all 5th-, 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade girls who live in the Prospect attendance area.

Tryouts dates at the school are Saturday, Nov. 8 from 3-5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 9 from 6-9 p.m.

Football

Quarterback Scott Tolzien (Fremd) directed a scoring drive Saturday for the University of Wisconsin in the game at Iowa. He completed 4-of-7 passes for 90 yards in his first varsity appearance.

Also in the Big Ten, 6-foot-6, 292-pound Eric Hedstrom (Prospect) continues to work as a starting guard on offense at Purdue.

• Wide receiver Mike Egebrecht (Buffalo Grove) was named athlete of the week at Concordia University Chicago. He had a career-high 10 catches for 154 yards against Rockford College. Two of the receptions went for touchdowns of 26 and 14 yards. He also had a 49-yard punt return.

Badminton

Shannon Pohl (Prospect) has been keeping busy in world-class competition, winning two matches in the Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, taking a bronze medal in singles and keeping her position as the second-highest American in the world rankings.

She finished in the top eight in women's doubles and top 16 in mixed doubles in Peru.

Earlier, Pohl won three semifinal matches to make the finals in women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles in the Chicago Badminton Open. She won the women's singles and doubles titles.

Water polo

Ryan Torii (St. Viator) of Mercyhurst College (Erie, Pa.) had 1 goal and an assist against Washington & Jefferson and 4 goals and 2 assists against Salem International, both victories.

• Six area players contributed to Illinois State University's 2 wins in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at the University of Illinois Chicago: Captain Tom Cooney (Buffalo Grove), Mitch Tucker and Mike Lipinski (Palatine), Blaine Gryzaborek (Conant), Joe Armour (Hersey) and Kevin Kledzik (Schaumburg).

Volleyball

Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland (Wheeling) played a major role for North Carolina in a 3-2 win over Florida State. She keyed a run in one victory with an important kill, turned away two consecutive Florida State attacks with blocks with a game on the line, and then put down a kill that forced the fifth and final game.

Cross country

Augustana freshman Billy Wisser (Hersey) finished 6th in 26:05 over the 8,000-meter course in the Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg College in Wavery, Iowa.

Soccer

Sophomore Brittney Parker (Warren) of Monmouth College was named Midwest Conference Defensive Performer of the Week. She starred in the back as the Fighting Scots went 2-0-1 for the week and started the scoring against Ripon with a goal off a corner kick, also contributing an assist.

Tennis

Beth Kaufman (Barrington) of Carthage College was named to the first team in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. She is a repeat first-team member.

Diving

Junior Katelyn Prorok (Hersey) of Illinois State won her second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week honor. She recorded a first-place finish on the 1-meter board (252.37) and second on the 3-meter board (253.50) against St. Louis. Her scores on both the 1-meter and 3-meter this season are leading the Missouri Valley.

Coaching clinics

American Sports Education Program coaching certification clinics have been scheduled for three area sites. Non-teachers who would like to coach on the high school level can attend one of the following clinics to obtain certification: Saturday, Nov. 1 at St. Viator High School; Saturday, Jan. 10 at Oakton College; Sunday, Feb. 22 at Notre Dame High School.
