No deal for Kaneland school district, teachers

After failing to reach an agreement over the weekend, the Kaneland District 302 and Kaneland Teachers Association are set to resume contract talks tonight.

Saturday night's negotiating session lasted 11 hours and involved a federal mediator.

Leaders from both sides are confident a resolution is near, according to a joint statement released by the district and teachers union.

Both groups say the stalemate centers on salaries and retirement benefits.

According to the District 302 Web site, the difference between the financial impact of proposals from both sides going into mediation was about $1 million.

Bargaining talks initially began Oct. 9. Last week, the 360-member union voted 267-11 to file a 10-day intent to strike.
