College students question bailout
Our class was interested in what was on the minds of college students as the U.S. Congress debated and finally approved the $700 billion rescue plan.
After interviewing several students in October, we discovered that most respondents did not support the rescue plan.
During this qualitative research, we learned that many students were upset, and believed that taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for the mistakes that the lenders made.
Some of the comments were:
-"It seems like there are no rules for corporations. We shouldn't be bailing them out."
-"Basically, there is no leadership in America."
-"I really don't think it's fair for us, the working class, to be basically paying for the wealthier people's mistakes."
-"I support the plan with restrictions. When the economy gets better, the money should come back to us in some way. For example, lower taxes and stimulus checks."
In summary, the majority of the college students participating in the interviews did not support the rescue plan. They also expressed concerns about the fairness of the plan.
