Knights' momentum fades
Prospect continued its late-season resurgence by scoring the first 2 goals in Saturday night's Class 3A boys soccer regional quarterfinal.
Then Lake Forest responded with a surge the Knights were unable to answer at George Gattas Stadium in Mount Prospect.
The 17th-seeded Scouts (6-10-3) scored 3 goals in the final 17 minutes and won 4-2 to advance to Monday's 3 p.m. regional semifinal at Glenbrook South against top-seed Waukegan.
"This sums up our season," said senor defender Spencer Kearney as the 16th-seeded Knights finished 6-11-4. "Not to be cocky, but we've been the better team a lot of times and we just can't finish the game."
Prospect couldn't have started any better as junior Will Hall popped in a deflection of Patryk Ruta's blast.
The Knights went up 2-0 with 16:50 left in the first half when Francisco Nunez converted off a Brayhan Nunez free kick.
"It looked like our night," said Prospect coach Kurt Trenkle.
But Lake Forest's only loss in its last 7 games was to North Suburban Conference champ Lake Zurich.
"We've just had one of those seasons where if something can go wrong it has," said Scouts coach Rob Parry. "We've been in games where we're down 2-0 or we've given up silly goals and found ways to come back."
It started 12:09 before halftime when Michael Shipp scored on the left side. And the play of standout midfielder Harry Shipp was beginning to take effect for the Scouts.
Then Cole Smith used his speed for what Parry called "two fantastic finishes" on the far post for a tie with 16:52 left and a 3-2 lead at 9:06. Alex Wettermann's goal at 1:48 sealed the Knights' fate.
"We let them get control of the game," Kearney said of the end of the first half, "and it went downhill from there."
Elk Grove 2, Bartlett 0: Sophomore Ceasar Rodriguez scored his 14th goal and J.J. Lastovich fired home his fifth as No. 16 Elk Grove (8-9-1) advanced to Tuesday's semifinals of its own regional and will face No. 2 Geneva at 4:30 p.m.
Lastovich also assisted on Rodriguez's goal while Leif Lundgren had the helper on Lastovich's score.
Grenadiers goalkeeper Andy Larson made 7 saves in the shutout.
Leyden 4, Elgin 1: Edgar Mendez had 2 goals as No. 12 Leyden advanced to Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. Streamwood regional semifinal against the fifth-seeded hosts.
West Chicago 2, Meadows 0: No. 14 West Chicago advanced to face No. 3 Schaumburg in Tuesday's 5 p.m. Lake Park regional semifinal.
Barrington 4, Lake Park 3: Ryan Mangone (15 goals) and Andrew Komnick each scored 2 goals for host Barrington (17-5) in the nonconference game.
