Root for the Bears, help no-kill animal shelter

The Alumni Club hosts a chili fundraiser for the no-kill animal shelter The Buddy Foundation. During the Bears/Vikings game, chow down on unlimited chili provided by area restaurants or sample stuff from a tailgate buffet. Raffle prizes and a football squares contest are part of the mix.

Truly Oktober

No September dates for The Village Tavern's first Oktoberfest. This historic 1847 tavern launches its own Bavarian beer festival with a big tent capable of seating 200 and attractions such as a specialty car show and a concert featuring the R.J. Express.

Facts: Go German at 130 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19. Free admission, but attendees must be 21 or older. (847) 634-3117.

Divine at 39

Don Roth's Blackhawk steakhouse celebrates its 39th suburban anniversary with a series of 39 percent discounts and other specials through Friday, Oct. 31. The actual anniversary date is Monday, Oct. 20, so expect an extra-special dining experience on that date.
