Mount Prospect French Market on tap for Sunday (again)

Join the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission Sunday, Oct. 12, when they host "A Mount Prospect French Market" in conjunction with the weekly farmers' market, run by the Mount Prospect Lions Club. The market was rescheduled due to torrential rain on its original date in mid-September.

The French Market/farmers' market will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Metra commuter parking lot along Northwest Highway at Route 83.

This special one-day French Market will feature a sidewalk cafe by Retro Bistro, a French cooking demonstration by Dave's Specialty Foods, Brie's Gift Gallery antique bazaar, Busse Flowers fresh cut bouquets, Artisan 133 fine handcrafted goods and Vino 100 French wines. This is all in addition to the regular farmers' market vendors and a French accordion player, sponsored by Ravenswood Bank.

The market will be sponsored by the Mount Prospect Sister Cities Commission as a celebration of Mount Prospect's relationship with its Sister City, Sèvres, France, and to promote French culture in our community.

Mount Prospect and Sèvres, France, officially entered into their Sister City relationship in May 2000 when a delegation from Sèvres first visited Mount Prospect. Since then, several exchanges have taken place on individual and group levels.

Sèvres is a city of 23,000 residents and is a suburb of Paris, located on the Seine River.

Victorian London: England's Queen Victoria had a reputation for being straight-laced and prudish. Therefore, anything associated with the time of her reign has that same expectation.

Yet, according to historian Linda Putnam, there was a darker side to Victorian England. and in particular, London.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St., Putnam will delve into the Victorians' seedier pursuits which certainly contradicted the proper lifestyle they projected to the world.

Putnam's program is part of the library's Cultural Month Series entitled "Channeling the British Isles." To register, visit www.mppl.org/events or call (847) 253-5675.
