Briefs: Geneva school forum
The first of three Geneva Unit District 304 forums to discuss a boundary study for Fabyan Elementary School is at 7 p.m. today at Geneva Middle School South, 1415 Viking Drive. Fabyan Elementary School will open to students in August 2009. At this time, only residents of the South Mill Creek subdivision have been identified as moving to Fabyan Elementary School, as it will be their new neighborhood school. The forums are leading up to an Oct. 20 special meeting of the board of education, where the boundary study process will be discussed.
Group home reopens:
A little more than a year after a DuPage County Health Department group home in West Chicago was heavily damaged by fire, facility staff is marking its reopening. The group home houses eight clients from the county's mental health services division. An open house will be held before a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 142 Wood St.
Kane sheriff honored:
The Hispanic State Law Enforcement Association recently honored Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez with the Hector Jordan Lifetime Achievement Award. Perez's father and former Kane County Undersheriff Pete Perez received the same award in 1990. The award recognizes "a lifetime of contribution, sacrifice and perseverance against odds that most of us never overcome," according to the association. For details, visit hislea.org.
Yardwork seminar:
A seminar on the basics of fall yardwork will raise money Saturday, Oct. 18, for the Tri City Health Partnership, a free medical clinic in St. Charles. The program is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon at Wasco Nursery & Garden Center, 41W781 Route 64, west of St. Charles. Visitors will learn when and how to plant, prune and fertilize. Suicide group to meet:
Attempters' of Suicide support group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at Stone Manor, 528 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia. It is sponsored by Suicide Prevention Services. For more information, call (630) 482-9696, or visit spsfv.org.
Video Shootout planned:
Downtown Geneva will be the backdrop for an amateur film competition Oct. 11. The Digital Video Shootout will give teams 12 hours to write a script, shoot footage, edit and produce a 2 to 5-minute film. Certain shots are required, including a Geneva merchant. Winners will be announced at the Geneva Film Festival Nov. 8. The entry fee is $50. The final product must be between 2 and 5 minutes long. For details on entering, visit genevafilmfestival.org. Township brush pickup:
The final St. Charles Township brush pickup dates are Oct. 14 and Nov. 3. Unincorporated St. Charles residents should call the township road district office at (630) 584-3496 the Friday before each pickup and leave their address if they have brush to be picked up.
