Moore to end LIbertyville Township tenure

Her term as Libertyville Township supervisor doesn't end until May, but Betty Ann-Moore has decided to forego the rigors of a campaign and won't seek another four-year term.

With nominating petitions for the consolidated elections in April becoming available soon, Moore, 70, said she wanted to let it be known she won't seek re-election so others who may be considering a run could prepare.

"It's signal. If you want to be supervisor, come on in," she said Thursday.

Considered a formidable presence in the post, she could have run and resigned after taking office and let the town board appoint a replacement.

"In my book, that's not cricket," Moore said. "I would prefer to be straightforward."

Moore has a long political resume, including former Lake County Democratic chairman and has served 10 years on the township board. She was elevated from trustee to supervisor in January 2003, taking over for the late F.T. "Mike" Graham, who resigned for health reasons. She overcame a concerted challenge and was elected supervisor in 2005.

Moore also was appointed to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's board of directors in August 2005. She will continue in that post.

"I'm privileged to serve in that position," she said. "My service will continue as long as it is wanted."

Although she felt she was "hitting her stride" as supervisor and loved the job, a campaign and a possible four more years of service was a bit more than she wanted to invest.

She also says she has largely completed the work she wanted to do at the township level.

"I came in with a large agenda of things I wanted to rearrange, renovate, revise and review, " she said.

Among those were successfully lobbying for state legislation to allow the township to keep its open space fund, and renovating and expanding the town hall.
