Today is the last chance area residents have to weigh in on Canadian National's proposed purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co. CN wants to use the EJ&E line, which runs in an arc around the Chicago region, to reroute freight traffic from lines in Chicago and inner suburbs. The Surface Transportation Board, a three-member, presidentially appointed board that has final say on the transaction, is accepting comments from area residents on the proposal. Written letters must be postmarked by Sept. 30 and mailed to Phillis Johnson-Ball, Surface Transportation Board, 395 E Street SW, Washington, D.C. 20423. Comments should reference docket No. 35087. Residents also can call (800) 347-0689, or go to stb.dot.gov to comment.
$40,000 raised Bischof outing
The Cynthia L. Bischof Memorial Foundation raised more than $40,000 at its inaugural fundraising golf tournament and dinner last week at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer. About 140 golfers and 60 additional people attended the event. "We had a great day for this event, to honor Cindy's memory and to raise money and awareness in an ongoing fight against domestic violence," Michael Bischof, president of the Cynthia L. Bischof Memorial Foundation, said. "I am sure that Cindy had a hand in the weather and her eye on the course." Proceeds from the golf outing, sponsorships, cash contributions and raffle will go to help victims of domestic violence. Bischof was killed March 7, 2008, by domestic violence.
Fremd opening delayed
Fremd High School's new artificial turf system is getting a quick test in how it deals with rain. Palatine-Schaumburg High School 211 officials now say they will allow students to try out the stadium's new playing surface today, Sept. 30, as rainy conditions will keep physical education classes and the marching band indoors Monday, which was when school officials had planned on showcasing the renovated field. It's part of the $8.7 million stadium renovation project at District 211's five schools. In addition, each stadium will get a new track.
Schaumburg High School's stadium is set to be ready later Oct. 17 as construction delays forced school officials to push back the turf's dedication, and also the rescheduling of homecoming week. The remaining three schools are supposed to get fields in 2009.
Crutches, cell phone stolen
Three men attacked and robbed a 23-year-old man around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, on the 200 block of South Roselle Road in Schaumburg, police said. According to reports, the offenders drove up in two cars, got out, approached the victim, asking about the apartments in the area. Then punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground, kicked him in the ribs and back, and stole his cell phone and crutches, police said. Value of the phone was estimated at $350; a value for the crutches was not available.
