Glenbard West swamps Addison Trail 69-13

Of all the touchdowns scored in Saturday's football game between Addison Trail and Glenbard West, one held particular interest.

At first-and-goal from Addison Trail's 5-yard line, Glenbard West ran a new offensive set titled "Rhino Watt." It went pretty much like it sounds.

Inserted at tailback was 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman Chris Watt. The Hilltoppers' homecoming crowd hummed as the Notre Dame-bound senior bent the Blazers' interior line 4 yards backward on his first carry.

Watt got the handoff again and launched himself headfirst over the goal line, a style somewhere between Walter Payton and that big, angry bull from the old Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Watt had his first career touchdown, one of 10 Glenbard West (5-0) scored, all on the ground, in the Hilltoppers' 69-13 West Suburban Conference crossover win at Duchon Field in Glen Ellyn.

Glenbard West coach Chad Hetlet stressed "Rhino Watt" was not done to kick sand in Addison Trail's face but was "kind of like throwing him a bone" for Watt's line play and, particularly, his leadership.

Watt got ribbed that his aerial assault was more William "Refrigerator" Perry than Payton, but regardless of the verticality Watt realized his dream of scoring a touchdown.

"I owe everything to Coach Hetlet," said Watt, who as a freshman tight end had a touchdown called back due to penalty.

"If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have gotten that carry," Watt said. "I owe him so much for that. For the rest of the season, every play, I owe him that. I'm just so glad that he gave me the opportunity to do something like that."

Unfortunately for Addison Trail, Glenbard West scoring opportunities were plentiful thanks in part to field position from 2 lost fumbles and 2 interceptions by Glenbard West's Jack Marston.

Glenbard West scored on its first eight possessions, most taking no more than two plays to do the job.

Touchdown runs by Robert Cook, Bryant Venson and Watt gave Glenbard West a 21-0 lead at 6:42 of the first quarter.

Addison Trail (1-4) shook up the joint when Blazers quarterback Erik Janik hit Adam Grow in stride flying past the coverage for an 81-yard touchdown pass. Jorge Campos added the kick.

Glenbard West answered with touchdowns by Venson and Cook to lead 35-7 by the end of the first quarter.

Cook, Matt Hassan, Steve Jones and Adam Bruere scored in the second quarter to make it 62-7 at halftime, establishing a running clock for the entire second half. Glenbard West ended the game with 264 yards rushing on 33 carries, an 8-yard average.

Frank Cervantes ran for 50 yards to lead Addison Trail, which added a touchdown on the game's last play, a 41-yard Janik pass to Keeshawn Boisvert.

"You've got to keep playing the game, and that's the thing we preached to the kids at halftime, that you've got to keep playing the game," said Blazers coach Paul Parpet. "I think we did that, and we'll get this out of our system and get ready for (Willowbrook)."
