Briefs: Family day at pioneer school
Family Fun Day is from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Pioneer Sholes School, a restored one-room schoolhouse in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, off Dean Street west of Randall Road, near St. Charles. St. Professional storyteller Mary Kroening will perform, and children and adults can try to out-spell their peers in spelling bees. Try your luck at marbles, tops, drop the clothespin in the bottle, or the fish pond. Other games, such as cat and mouse, graces, or the potato race, will test the skill of all contestants. What's corn's story?
Learn the history of corn in a lecture at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Garfield Farm Museum, Garfield Road and Route 38, LaFox. Museum volunteer Chuck Bauer, a former polymer scientist for Amoco, will speak. The fee is $5, and includes refreshments. "Landmarks Plus!" celebration at the 1906 Gridley-Snow house is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Discover the home originally named "Ravine House" by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and share cocktails hors d'oeuvres and conversation with architecture and history enthusiasts. City hall entry closed
Due to the stairway reconstruction at the James Street entrance to Geneva City Hall, the public will need to use the First Street entrance through Oct. 3.
Teacher wins award:
Batavia High School mathematics teacher Neal Pleckham received the Wal-Mart/Sam's Club Local Teacher of the Year award Friday, Sept. 19 from the Batavia Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. He received a $100 gift card for classroom supplies, and the school received $1,000.

Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva, will be dedicated at 3 p.m. Sunday. The fifth-grade students will perform music; Superintendent Kent Mutchler and school principal Julie Dye will speak; and there will be tours and refreshments until 5 p.m.
