Preview: Immaculate Conception at Driscoll
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today.
Last year: Driscoll 37, Immaculate Conception 21.
Last week: IC 14, Marian Central 7; Driscoll 49, Marmion 24.
Outlook: Talk about diverse game plans. IC is most successful when running backs Paul Hornstra and Carlos Rodriguez pound away, again and again, controlling the clock behind an offensive line that averages upward of 250 pounds.
Only it's not for 3 yards, they average 7.3 a carry. Driscoll favors a wide-open approach headed by quarterback Steven Schwabe, who targets five different receivers, including tailback Nick Campanella, who busted Marmion for a career-high 152 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns last week.
IC saw shotgun-spread against Marian Central - linebacker Antonio Taylor made 12 tackles and forced a fumble as the Knights outrushed Marian 275-14 - but not with Driscoll's flair for formation and motion. Knights coach Bill Schmidt wants to make Driscoll drive the ball; Highlanders coach Brandon New wants to force the pass.
Inevitably, it comes down to which of these proud franchises can more successfully exact its will at the line of scrimmage.
