Prospect rallies twice to edge Elk Grove in two

Prospect's girls volleyball team was like Michael Jordan on Thursday night. They came back - twice.

Trailing visiting Elk Grove 21-16 in the first game, the Knights scored 9 of the match's final 10 points to win 25-22 in Mid-Suburban League East Division action.

In the second game, the Grenadiers had a 19-11 edge and still led 24-22 while serving for the game, only to see Prospect score the final 4 points en route to a 25-22, 26-24 win.

"I think it was a really good effort by the team because the last couple games we've had, we didn't do such a good job of coming back," said Prospect outside hitter Rachel Hunt. "We'd just side out and that was it."

Hunt led Prospect with 8 kills, many coming at key moments late in each game, but she deflected the praise and complimented her teammates.

"We have a lot of really strong hitters," Hunt said. "And everybody's passing was really good this game. It's just where the setter decides to go and where she is in position to go. And it's really a team effort on the hitting."

Lindsey Pickle and Betsy Bates each had 4 kills for the Knights to complement Hunt's performance. Freshman Danielle Siwik was setting up her teammates all match and registered a team-high 12 assists. Abby Homuth had 8 assists of her own for Prospect (5-10, 3-3).

Prospect coach Mike Riedy said the Knights practiced for the first time in a week and a half Wednesday, and he felt getting back to some drills paid off for his team.

"We had a really good practice and they came out fired up," Riedy said.

It was nothing but disappointment for Elk Grove (13-6, 4-2) after losing the early leads.

"Prospect played really well," said Elk Grove coach Joe DiSilvio.

"Kudos to them. We were just kind of going through the motions at times."

There were a couple times late in each game when Elk Grove could have put the game away, but poor serves allowed the Knights to have opportunities to win.

"We missed serves at key times, so those were momentum killers," DiSilvio said.
