Benet kicks off homecoming week with coronation and pep rally

Everything at Benet Academy this week has an air of Jazz Age sophisticated cool.

The Lisle school is celebrating homecoming Gatsby-style, leading up to the dance Sept. 27, which will have the theme "Gatsby's Gala" based on the novel, "The Great Gatsby."

The Red Wings kicked off the week last Saturday with a powder puff football game, fun fest and bazaar, followed by a special pep rally.

The newly crowned royalty are presiding over a week of activities that included trading carnations on Monday and Teacher Appreciation Day today. Teachers are receiving candy "survival kits" and taking turns playing their favorite songs during passing periods.

Wednesday features a table tennis tournament, and students may trade in their uniforms for sports-themed T-shirts, then watch a movie outdoors in the evening. Thursday features a badminton tournament while Friday offers a pep rally to get students ready for the homecoming football game against Nazareth Academy that night.

Special events committee members hope the "Gatsby's Gala" dance, to be held outside under a tent, will carry the romance and glamor of the 1920s.
