Beach Cleanup: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 20, Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve, on Sheridan Road at Old Elm Road and Simonds Way, near Highland Park. The Alliance for the Great Lakes invites volunteers to help clear a nearly 1-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline. Cleanup volunteers will meet along the trail east of the parking area by the interpretive signs. Bring work gloves if you have them; a limited supply will be available. Citizens for Conservation seed collection: Thursdays and Saturdays 9 -11 a.m.; and Sundays 3:30-5 p.m., 459 W. Highway 22, Lake Barrington. Volunteers of all ages are invited to help collect seeds from a wide variety of native plants. (847) 382-7283.

"Let's Luau" for Save-A-Pet: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, Lakewood Forest Preserve, Shelter E, Route 176 and Fairfield Road, Wauconda. The 22nd Annual "Paws on the Path Petathlon." Raise funds for Save-A-Pet while enjoying time outdoors with a canine companion. Morning hosts Jimmy and Jen from 102.3 WXLC Radio will broadcast live from the site. Learn tips from professional animal behaviorist and dog trainer Dennis Hill and meet "animal communicator" and Reiki practitioner Linda Epstein. Rising from Ashes: 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, Brushwood at Ryerson Woods, on Riverwoods road between Half Day and Deerfield roads near Deerfield. Opening Reception for an exhibition of furniture made from reclaimed ash wood killed by emerald ash borers. Includes a presentation on ecology of the emerald ash borer by a forest preserve naturalist and a gallery talk by the Chicago Furniture Design Association. The exhibition runs through Friday, Oct. 3. Admission is free.

Pond life: 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, Stillman Nature Center, 33 W. Penny Road, Barrington. With the help of long-handled dip nets, visitors will scoop into the pond in hoped of catching crayfish, dragonfly larvae, tadpoles and other pond inhabitants. Meet at the North Unit parking lot: Turn east on 17th Street from Sheridan Road and follow the entrance to the last parking lot closest to the beach. Or meet at 2 p.m. at the Bank of Palatine parking lot, Southeast corner of Northwest Highway and Plum Grove Road, Palatine, to carpool.
