Alice Gustafson PTO: The Alice Gustafson School PTO will host its annual Children's Clothing and Toy Resale from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the school, 905 Carlisle Road in Batavia. The sale entrance is located on the north side of the school and admission is free. The massive sale, now in its 23rd year, features infant through teen clothing for all seasons, maternity wear, baby equipment and furniture, shoes, uniforms, sporting goods, costumes, books, games, videos, CDs and toys. Shoppers will find all clothing neatly sized and hanging on garment racks filling the school's gymnasium. Merchandise is pre-inspected for new or gently-used condition. Bargain hunters will find many brand names at rock-bottom prices. Saturday features a half-price sale on all white-ticketed items. Jewish Genealogical Society: The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois welcomes Stephen Morse. He will discuss how to use his "One-Step Web Pages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools" and "One-Step Web Pages: A Hodgepodge of Lesser Known Gems" at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21 at Temple Beth Israel, 3601 W. Dempster St., Skokie. This program is free to members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Have you always wanted to discover your family's history but didn't know where to begin? Even if you don't know the names of your grandparents, where your ancestors originated, or if their town was destroyed in the Holocaust, you can trace your Jewish roots. WIM: The Aurora chapter of Women in Management will host a luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Orchard Valley Golf Course Restaurant, 2411 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora. The theme will be "Juxtapoise! Empowering Women Across The World!"
The WIM Aurora Chapter is setting the tone for this year's program schedule with the inclusion of "The Juxtapoise!" Juxtaposie exists not only to offer women a great career opportunity selling a quality, fashionable, product line but also to rescue and restore children trafficked for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation. Geneva Lions: Free hearing screening will be provided by the Illinois Lions Foundation Hearing Screening bus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at the corner of James and Third Streets in Geneva. The bus is sponsored by the Geneva Lions Club as part of their year round community service in sight and sound projects, to help protect the hearing of the public by early alert measures. Anyone 18 and older, and minors, age 10 to 17 accompanied by a parent, are encouraged to come. Individuals found to have potential problems will be referred to an audiologist for further attention. The bus is staffed by an audiology technician. No advance signup is required. The screening test takes approximately 20 minutes. For details, call (630) 262-8311.
In addition to sponsorship of the hearing screening bus, the Geneva Lions operate a hearing aid recycling program. Hearing aids collected in the community are sent to the Illinois Lions Foundation, which refurbishes them in conjunction with an audiologist. Donations of hearing aids may be dropped off in any of the approximately 20 Lions Club eyeglass/hearing aid recycling boxes located in various places in Geneva and St. Charles. Individuals in need who are hearing impaired can access refurbished hearing aids by obtaining a referral from one of the many local social service organizations. That organization will then contact the Geneva Lions Club, which covers the cost of providing the hearing aid.
Kane County Audubon Society: The public is invited to programs and activities of the Kane County Audubon Society.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, join the bird walk at LeRoy Oakes Kane County Forest Preserve. They will be looking for fall migrants and possibly early winter arrivals. Elburn Bunco: Every year, Elburn Bunco for Breast Cancer works toward educating women about breast health as well as donating our profits to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In the past 4 years, the organization has donated more than $50,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This fight is made possible by the generous support of people like you. The fifth annual Bunco for Breast Cancer will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Lions Park in Elburn with sessions at 1 and 6 p.m.
Become a "Pink Ribbon Sponsor" and donate a raffle or door prize with program recognition. Become a "Breast Cancer Awareness Partner" for $100 and have your name listed in the program, along with recognition as a table sponsor. Zonta Club: Looking for some fellowship and networking opportunities with professional women in your community? The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia is a local organization of professional women working to improve the status of women in the tri city area. Fox Valley Woodworkers: Fox Valley Woodworkers Club Inc. meets from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln Ave., Batavia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Oct. 7. Club member Rich Rossio, an expert turner and retired teacher, will present "New Turning Tricks for Turners New & Old." Learn some neat new ideas and techniques from one of the area's best turning instructors and longtime turner. Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer: The Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer Committee is once again hosting a night of rolling the dice. The fourth annual fundraiser will be held on Friday, Oct. 17. Last year, the event raised more than $13,000 for breast cancer research. Because of the increasing interest in the event, it has been moved from Riverview Banquets to the Lincoln Inn, 1345 S. Batavia Ave, Batavia. The fundraiser hosted 250 ladies last year. This year attendance is limited to 200, so buy your tickets early.
Participants will get three rounds of bunco, appetizers, goody bags and a chance to win door prizes for a $25 entry fee. There will also be a cash bar, silent auction, and a Chinese raffle. New this year is a quilt raffle. The "New Bees" quilting circle in Batavia have created a breast cancer quilt for our fundraiser. The quilt is on display at Sue's Family Hair in Batavia. Raffle tickets are $5 each.
The night of the event doors will open at 5 p.m., and games will start at 6:15 p.m. There will be an hour of appetizers which will give our attendees time to preview the silent auction items and Chinese raffle prizes. Batavia Mothers' Club: The Batavia Mothers' Club is calling for crafters for its 23rd annual Autumn Arts & Crafts Show. The show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Mooseheart Fieldhouse, just off I-88 on Route 31 near the North Aurora and Batavia border. Pottawatomie Garden Club: The Pottawatomie Garden Club ends its 80th year celebration with a luncheon on Monday, Oct. 27 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Ave. (Route 25) in St. Charles.
Dee Gatins, luncheon chairwoman, has chosen an anniversary theme. Tables will be decorated with items pertaining to an anniversary year. New and honorary members will be recognized and landscape commendation awards will be given to local businesses by Pat Driessen and Judy Price. Annette and Craig MacLeon, owners of The Pure Gardener in Geneva, will present fall decorating tips. 2009 officers will be presented and 2008 officers and chairpersons recognized. Ruthie Callard, chairwoman of the 80th celebration, will have a surprise ending.
Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84: The Veteran's Day Parade, sponsored by Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84, will step off at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Benton and Water Streets in Aurora. The parade route will proceed North on Broadway to Downer Place and west to the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall. Included in this year's parade will be the Marmion Academy Flannigan Rifles, East Aurora High School NJROTC, the Chicago Highland Rifles, the Aurora Lamplighter Chorus and many veterans organizations.

Girl Scouts-Fox Valley Council: The Girl Scouts-Fox Valley Council is currently seeking sponsors, advertisers and auction item donations for the 14th annual Holiday Harvest Dinner Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at Piper's Banquets in Aurora. The theme for this year's Holiday Harvest is "Holiday Magic." Highlights of the evening will include a live and silent auction, cocktails, and sit-down dinner. Proceeds from this event underwrite the costs of many of the outstanding programs for Girl Scouts provided by the council. By supporting this event, individuals, businesses and organizations demonstrate their commitment to this youth development program for the girls in our communities. Batavia American Legion Post: The Batavia American Legion Post 504 is looking for the public's help in updating its history files.
