Republicans are the party of greed

I'm writing in response to Ryan Melchin's letter (Fence Post, July 28) lamenting the falsehood that the Democratic Party do nothing for middle class families.

Ryan, funny how the last Republican governor of the great state of Illinois was named Ryan also, as in convicted Gov. George Ryan.

Hey, how about that name George, as in George Bush, worst president to ever hold the reins of our once-glorious nation? Perhaps one day, God willing, we will see him and his administration held accountable for the war crimes they ordered and all troops convicted of various crimes on the battlefield will be pardoned.

The Republican Party of Illinois was so dominant for so long that they began to eat their young, cannibalizing the people of Illinois in the process.

For as long as I've been alive, the Democrats have always been the party for working people.

Under Ronald Reagan, things began to change in this country, and not in a good way. Greed became good, conspicuous consumption went ballistic, the rich and upper-middle class began to look down their noses at working people, and the best thing you could do in America was no longer being a good citizen, being a good person. It was being rich.

The conservatives have always fought for the rich and powerful. "More money and power for us old white dudes."

They will instigate wars in which the vast majority of combatants come from the poor, who have no other opportunities other than joining our armed forces. If they make it out alive, then they might have a fighting change at the rest of their lives.

If there are any more 19 year olds leaning Republican out there, and I know there are a few, I ask them, "why haven't you signed up for duty in Iraq?" The answer: because Republicans are always more patriotic in their rhetoric than in their actions.
