Jones wins starting spot, delivers results at Carthage
Sophomore Evan Jones (Grayslake Central) didn't waste any time.
After missing most of 2007 with a knee injury, Jones had a tough battle to win the starting quarterback position at Carthage College.
They made the right choice.
Today, he stands as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week.
Jones completed 23-of-35 passes for a school-record 428 yards in a 70-46 win over Hope. He also had 6 touchdown passes to tie a Carthage game record, and his 434 total yards (6 rushing) broke the school mark.
• Sophomore linebacker Mike Morrissey (Stevenson), a former walk-on, has earned a full football scholarship at Boston College.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound son of former Chicago Bear and Michigan State linebacker Jim Morrissey fills the first backup role in the two-deep lineup at linebacker.
Morrissey, the Daily Herald All-Area captain at Stevenson, redshirted in 2006 as a college freshman and then saw action in a majority of the 2007 Boston College games.
Also at BC, 6-7, 287-pound sophomore Anthony Castonzo (Lake Zurich) is still running as the No. 1 left tackle on offense, and 6-7, 267-pound freshman Emmett Cleary (St. Viator) is No. 2 right tackle.
• Mike Egebrecht (Buffalo Grove), a captain at Concordia University Chicago, took in 3 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown against Blackburn College.
• JC Stickney (Barrington), freshman at Williams College (Williamstown, Mass.) had 7 receptions, including a 56-yard touchdown, in the Illinois Coaches Association All-Star Game in Peoria.
Basketball
Rachel Theodore (Prospect) has been named the assistant women's basketball coach at North Park University Chicago. Theodore was a four-year starter at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., and captain as a junior and senior.
Soccer
Area products helped Augustana College beat MacMurray 5-0. Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove) and Matt Meyer (Schaumburg) scored goals. Michael Dolan (Libertyville) shared keeper duties with Tom Marsden (Grayslake).
• North Central's Mikie McEvoy (Buffalo Grove) was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week. The freshman goalkeeper recorded three straight shutouts.
• Martina Pettenuzzo (Prospect) of the University of Buffalo was named the school's athlete of the week. She scored 2 of the 4 Buffalo goals in a win over Howard University. She had 4 points in her first four starts this season.
• Elmhurst College goalkeeper Sebastian Domczewski (St. Viator) did not allow a goal in 3 straight wins.
Track and field
Suzy Turner (Palatine) of Illinois State and Keli Coleman (Carmel) and Jim Beatty (Antioch) of Augustana College were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams.
Volleyball
Kyrsten Becker (Rolling Meadows) of the University of St. Francis was named to the all-tournament team at the Taylor University Challenge. She had a career-best 14 kills against Taylor. In the St. Xavier/IIT Tournament she converted all but 4 of her 53 passes on serve receives in two matches and had 25 serves with 5 aces against Mt. Mercy (Iowa).
Golf outing
The annual Rolling Meadows High School Athletic Booster Club golf outing is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Arlington Lakes Golf Course.
Tee times begin at 10 a.m. for 18 holes and 1 p.m. for nine holes, followed by a party, awards and raffle in the clubhouse.
There are still openings for both 9- and 18-hole foursomes.
Non-golfers are invited to show their support by attending the post-round event.
Proceeds will benefit all Rolling Meadows High School athletic programs along with the Post Prom Committee.

Softball
Shortstop Jen Jacobson (Conant) of the University of Chicago, who also played for the Schaumburg Sluggers, finished eighth in batting for Division III with a .517 average. Lauren Cruz (Maine West), another former Slugger and now at Wisconsin-Whitewater, was a third-team Division III All-American.
