Team effort lifts Broncos
Team was the key for Barrington against Prospect on Friday night at Barrington Community Stadium.
All phases of the Broncos' attack were dominant in a 31-12 Mid-Suburban League crossover victory.
Barrington (3-0) scored on its first 5 possessions, didn't allow the Knights to score until the fourth quarter, and held Prospect junior quarterback Miles Osei, who had wreaked havoc on defenses the first two weeks, to 14 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Osei completed 13 of his 24 passes for 150 yards, but most of those yards came on Prospect's final 3 drives after it trailed 31-0.
The Broncos also had a few big returns on special teams, and a blocked punt.
Senior quarterback Cody Seeger led the way for Barrington's offense with 69 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns and was 9-for-13 passing for 137 yards and an 18-yard score to Rodney Brown.
"In this offense, anyone can have a big game," Seeger said. "It just depends on who they are keying on. This week they were keying on (running back) Sam (Ojuri) and the receivers, and that left it up to me to make plays. And the offensive line did an outstanding job."
Ojuri, who missed last week with an ankle injury, rushed for 92 yards and a 32-yard TD.
Seeger said he felt the Broncos' offense wasn't playing up to its potential in the first 2 games, but turned a corner on Friday night.
"The offense is finally starting to come together," Seeger said. "The first two games, we did a good job. We did what we needed to do to win, but this is what it's going to be like from now on. The offensive line did a great job for me, so I've got to give it out to them."
With the way each team had played in the first two weeks of the season, Friday night figured to be a back-and-forth game. Barrington was just too good in the early going, something Seeger attributed to hard work during the week.
"We studied them all week, we didn't take them lightly," Seeger said. "We're not going to take anyone lightly."
Barrington coach Joe Sanchez agreed that the preparation was a big part of his team's victory.
"We had a great game plan, our offensive coaching staff did a great job preparing our kids, and then our kids came out and did a great job," Sanchez said.
But Sanchez said he was most proud of the defensive effort.
"The 'Miles Osei Show' for the last two weeks was running wild, he's a heck of an athlete," Sanchez said. "He's going to be one heck of a quarterback, mark my words. So the fact that we were able to contain him for most of the game shows great resolve. I was really happy with our kids. They took that challenge and knew what we were up against."
In Prospect (2-1) coach Brent Pearlman's eyes, it was all Barrington from the beginning.
"It was just a 100 percent one-sided affair tonight," Pearlman said. "From the moment we took the field we were not in this game. Just not in it, in no way, shape or form."
While Pearlman didn't like what Prospect did, Sanchez was happy with all aspects of the Broncos' performance.
"All three phases (offense, defense, and special teams), for the most part, came through tonight," Sanchez said. "So I just want to keep building."
