Hogs up front push past Fenton

The football team from Waterford Union High School in Wisconsin rolled into Bensenville in chartered buses that had to be big.

How else would the Wolverines transport their linemen?

Waterford (2-1) controlled the line of scrimmage thanks to the physical play of its big boys in the trenches on both sides of the ball in a 34-0 win over host Fenton (1-2).

"We're a physical football team," said Waterford coach Carey Venne, "and we always run the ball well."

The Wolverines had 265 rushing yards to the Bison's 42, thanks to a handful of good running backs and a line that opened up holes for them.

"They dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage," said Fenton coach Mark Farrell. "They're big, they're thick and they're physical. And our guys really didn't block well today."

"We weren't physical enough," said Fenton senior quarterback Ricky Prignano. "Especially against a big line like that, you've got to give it everything you've got, and leave it all on the field.

"We can move the ball, but tonight I'd drop back three steps, look up, and there'd be two guys coming at me."

"We knew they had a pretty good quarterback, and our emphasis was on stopping him tonight," Venne said.

Prignano was pressured all night in going 5 of 15 for 39 passing yards.

Waterford led 14-0 after a quarter and 28-0 by halftime, spearheaded by a 43-yard passing touchdown and a 68-yard touchdown run. The Wolverines scored once more in the third, while Fenton struggled to move the football.

Fenton finished with 79 total yards of offense on the night.

"Against Maine East (in the season's first week) we were able to dominate the line of scrimmage," Farrell said. "Today we played against a tough, hard-nosed team that knows how to play football, and we just didn't handle it very well."

Prignano pointed to a much-needed week of upcoming practice as a key for his squad heading into the season's fourth week, and his coach concurred.

"We need to practice better," Farrell said. "Until we start to practice better, and more consistently during the week, we will be inconsistent on Friday night."

Fenton's Eric Justiniano ran the ball hard for Fenton, and the Bison got a sack from Nico Watt on the night.
