Health department honored for excellence
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center's medication distribution plan this week received a Model Practice award from The National Association of County and City Health Officials. It is one of 25 local public health programs selected nationwide to earn the recognition. The health department together with the Lake County Clerk's Office, townships, municipalities, and area police and fire departments developed a plan to use local polling places as distribution sites if the need for mass medication arises during a public health emergency. The health department would use 147 of the county's polling sites to distribute medication to the entire population within 48 hours. A committee of peers selected the health department's medication distribution plan from a group of 118 local health department applications. The Model Practice awards program honors initiatives, including programs, resources, and tools that demonstrate how local health departments and their community partners can effectively collaborate to address local public health concerns. Lake County's plan will become part of an online, searchable database of successful public health practices in areas ranging from immunization and maternal and child health to infectious diseases and emergency preparedness.
