Silk and Thistle: The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, has decided that Sept. 12-20 is "Dance Scottish Week."

The Chicago Branch is taking up the idea and holding a Dance Scottish Party from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Silk and Thistle Scottish country dance group which meets weekly at Fermilab's Kuhn Village Barn.

The party is a chance for newcomers to try out Scottish dancing - the participatory social dancing of Scotland, not the harder and showier Highland dancing. Both ceilidh and country dances will be presented for all to try. There will be demonstrations of more advance Scottish country dancing, and plenty of kilts in sight. Visitors can even try on a kilt to see how dancing in one feels. There will also be a demonstration of how to wear the more historic "great kilt."

There is no charge for the event. Tea and Scottish treats will be served, and attendees are welcome to bring a treat to share if they wish.

Silk and Thistle Scottish country dancing, a class of the RSCDS Chicago Branch, is held every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Fermilab's Kuhn Village Barn. There is also a class which meets in Chicago, the Loch Michigan group, on Sundays at 6 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ at 4250 N. Paulina St. For information, call (630) 584-0825 or (630) 840-8194, e-mail folkdance@fnal.gov, or visit www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkclub/folkdance.html or the RSCDS Chicago Branch Web site at rscds-chicago.org.

Geneva Lions: Free hearing screening will be provided by the Illinois Lions Foundation Hearing Screening bus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at the corner of James and Third Streets in Geneva. The bus is sponsored by the Geneva Lions Club as part of their year round community service in sight and sound projects, to help protect the hearing of the public by early alert measures. Anyone 18 and older, and minors, age 10 to 17 accompanied by a parent, are encouraged to come. Individuals found to have potential problems will be referred to an audiologist for further attention. The bus is staffed by an audiology technician. No advance signup is required. The screening test takes approximately 20 minutes. For details, call (630) 262-8311.

In addition to sponsorship of the hearing screening bus, the Geneva Lions operate a hearing aid recycling program. Hearing aids collected in the community are sent to the Illinois Lions Foundation, which refurbishes them in conjunction with an audiologist. Donations of hearing aids may be dropped off in any of the approximately 20 Lions Club eyeglass/hearing aid recycling boxes located in various places in Geneva and St. Charles. To find the location of a convenient recycling box, visit www.genevalionsclub.org. Individuals in need who are hearing impaired can access refurbished hearing aids by obtaining a referral from one of the many local social service organizations. That organization will then contact the Geneva Lions Club, which covers the cost of providing the hearing aid.
