National Public Lands Day: Helping Hands for America's Lands. This is the nation's largest, hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands that Americans enjoy. Participants will meet from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, for this 15th annual event. The meeting place is at the fen at Barbara Key Park, 9191 Pyott Road.
Free events all afternoon include guided nature walks, collecting seeds, clearing invasive brush, nature quizzes with prize, displays and literature and free posters.
Worldwide Day of Play: The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a Worldwide Day of Play event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. This free annual celebration, sponsored by Nickelodeon, promotes active playtime for children. There will be fun, family-orientated activities planned around three categories - health/fitness, music, and sports/games. Bring the whole family out to Sunset Park to enjoy the day. Get some free fitness and nutrition tips, too.
For adults
Adult Co-Rec Volleyball League: May/Walsh may be the best team to play the game of volleyball, but the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department thinks the next best team is just waiting to be discovered. Perhaps that team is yours - register for our Adult Co-Rec Volleyball League and find out.
The number of games played will depend upon the number of teams registered. Returning teams are given first priority. Just like at the Olympics, a single elimination tournament will be held at the end of the season to declare the champions.
A mandatory captain's meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Village Hall. The first game is scheduled on Sept. 17 in the Chesak Elementary school gym. Registration is $375 per team.
Stroller Strides: Do you enjoy exercising, but feel guilty leaving your kids in day care while you workout? Stop feeling guilty and start getting fit with Stroller Strides. This new class, offered through the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department, is a total fitness program that parents can do with their children. Class consists of power walking and jogging, body sculpting exercises using exercise tubing which is provided, the stroller and the environment. In 60 minutes, you'll get a total body workout improving your cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.
Whether you're an expert exerciser or just beginning an exercise regiment, Stroller Strides is ideal for all levels of fitness. You determine your level of intensity.

Class meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 16 in the Village Hall Multipurpose Room. Choose between a 12-class punch card for $109 resident/$119 nonresident, or an 8-class punch card for $73 resident/$83 nonresident. Dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, snacks for the kids and a towel or mat for the ground exercises.
For youth
Manicures with School and Spirit Nail Art: Youth, ages 6 to 12 can join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department in celebrating going back to school. Come show off your school spirit with a manicure and nail art done in your school colors.
Students of the A.B.C. School of Cosmetology & Nail Technology have a fun-filled afternoon planned just for you from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. Resident rate is $19, nonresident rate is $23.
Characters of Character: Just like parents and teachers, The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department strives to offer creative ways to teach children about good values. This new and exciting class, Characters of Character taught by instructor Joni Downey, is an excellent example of blending fun with education. Each month, your child can learn about different characters and the traits they represent through stories, art and coloring activities and discussion. Participants will earn a certificate of achievement representing the character trait.
Meet Manners Monkey, who helps remind you to use good manners, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 in the Village Hall Community Room. Resident rate is $14, nonresident rate is $17.
